How do artist communicate meaning through their art practice? This course is an introduction to the relationship of material, method, and process to meaning in art practice. Through research, critique, and application of concepts in material studio processes, we will explore a diverse range of methods of achieving meaning in an artwork.
METHOD
This course will utilize research, discussion, collaboration, projects, and research journals to construct a discourse of Contemporary Art practices. These forms of discourse are not independent of one another, but rather meant to inform each other. Therefore, It is important to always be present and participate.
LOGISTICS
Meetings:
This class is scheduled to meet two days a week. We will meet in room 131 of Flagg Hall every Monday and Wednesday as a large group. Generally Mondays will be group discussion and presentations. Wednesdays we will meet in our small groups for further discussions and time to work on projects in class.
Research Journals:
Each student will have a research journal to maps strategies of making, projects, and discussions. The journal should contain notes on readings, notes from in-class discussions and lectures, as well as detailed project outlines. These journals will be useful to revisit ideas as allow for critical read for examining methods of making and meaning.
Groups:
Students will be assigned to one group of three or four members. This will be their collaborative group for the entire semester. Respect for teammate is the most important contribution we can make in this class. We will have to build trust and be vulnerable in order to be successful in this class. Patience and compromise are important to these groups projects.
Artists Presentations:
Each student will sign up for an artist to research and give a 5 to 10 minute presentation. These presentation should include a bio, artwork and process of the artist. Please bring a handout for each student and myself . Upload a digital pdf. of the handout to your research journal. Be considerate of your classmates and craft this presentation well.
Grading:
Every two weeks students will receive a grade based on their research journals, contribution to in discussion, and projects.
70% - Strategies of Making
10% - Attendance
10% - Artist Presentations
10% - Individual Progress/Final Project
Attendance - Excessive absences [ 3 or more] can lower a grade by one full letter or more. Only absences resulting from extreme illness or otherwise documentable circumstances (such as a family emergency or emergency hospital/doctor visit) will be “excused”. All other absences will be counted. Two late arrivals or early departures will constitute an absence.
